Mental Health Care Plans + Medicare Rebates.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)?
An initial “screener” assessment report on your mental health + well being (conducted by your GP). It provides you with a referral to a Psychologist (entitling you to rebatable sessions), for further assessment, the development of a treatment plan + support .
Who is entitled to MHCP’s + rebates?
Anyone with a Medicare Card is entitled to the rebates available on a MHCP.
How do I get a MHCP?
Make an appointment with your GP. Make sure you request a MHCP appointment as they allow longer than a typical appointment duration. Psychiatrists + Paediatricians can also provide a MHCP referrals.
What does it entitle me to?
An $87.45 or $128.40 rebate on your psychology session fees. The rebate amount is dependant on wether you see a clinical or general psychologist. The gap fee you pay is usually approximately the same, however check the scheduled fee with your Psychologist before your first appointment.
How many sessions does it apply to?
You will be entitled to 20 rebates in a calendar year. Please note the sessions are referred in a block of 6, then 4, then a final 10. In between each of these you will be required to return to your GP for a review + request a referral for further sessions.
What does it cover?
The above rebate amounts can be applied to any 50 minute+ face-to-face, video-conferencing, or telephone session. Other rebate amounts are applicable for different psychology services + durations.
Can I still see a psychologist without a MHCP referral?
Yes. However you will not receive the Medicare Rebates and will be required to pay the full session fee. If you have a private health insurance policy which covers psychology you may be able to claim a reimbursement for a % of the fee.
